As their system is constantly evolving and changing, there may be some further steps that you will need to complete, and not all screenshots will be accurate.

Here is a step by step guide on how to comply with Making Tax Digital.

If you are a client that submits their own VAT, firstly you will need to access your Government gateway.

The next step is to follow the sign up to Making Tax Digital for VAT link, which will look something like this:

This will take you through to another page and you will need to scroll down until you find something that looks like this:

Click on this link and you will need:

  • Your business postcode
  • If a partnership, your partnership UTR

  • If a company, your company number and your company UTR
  • A valid e-mail address

Upon completion of this process, you will be sent a verification email, follow the link and complete the necessary information again.

Next, you will be sent an email that will look something like this:

Once you receive this final verification email (below), which may take up to 72 hours to arrive, you can move onto the next and final stage of the process which is to turn on MTD filing on your chosen third-party software.

For FreeAgent users:

In the section where you submit your VAT return, there is a green button which says “switch to MTD filing”, click this and the process is then complete.
