This International Women's Day, we’re taking the opportunity to spotlight the voices within our team and the experiences that shape them. This year, as the theme ‘Give to Gain’ encourages us to invest in one another, Karamveer Kaur, Trainee Accountant, shares her personal reflection on equality, identity and the values that guide her both professionally and culturally.
International Women's Day serves as an important reminder of the diverse and dynamic roles women play in every aspect of society. Growing up in a family that valued both tradition and progress, I have always been aware of the strength of women who balance the demands of culture, faith and career.
As a fifth-generation Sikh woman working at Towers & Gornall, my cultural background has played an important role in shaping my approach to work. I was brought up with strong values such as honesty, hard work, service to others and respect - qualities that are essential in the accounting profession.
I am starting to feel confident in balancing my British identity with my Sikh heritage. For me, my culture and my career are not separate. The values I grew up with support the professional standards I uphold every day in my role. I would like to mention the women who have paved the way for me, whether they’re the pioneers who were among the first to break the glass ceiling or the everyday women I interact with at work who make their mark in quieter but equally impactful ways.
It’s encouraging to see more women rising to leadership roles. I’ve been fortunate to work in an environment that values diversity and is committed to nurturing talent. I feel lucky to have continuous support from both my colleagues and family.
